Equipment

Keep your equipment clean. Oils and dirt can build up on bowling balls and shoes that can cause problems when you throw your ball.

Store your equipment in a proper bowling bag to keep it from getting damaged between uses.

Don't leave your equipment in your car. Temperature changes can cause differences in the performance of bowling balls. Because they are a dense material, a cold bowling ball will take a while to warm up to room temperature when it is brought into the bowling alley. Also, a cold ball is more likely to chip or crack when thrown.

Make sure your bowling ball is drilled properly for your hand. A ball that is not fitted properly will be difficult to handle.

When choosing a ball, pick a ball that is a comfortable weight. Too heavy, and you will have trouble keeping your balance. Too light, and you will find yourself lofting the ball as you become used to the weight.

Technique

When throwing the ball, always follow through with your arm so your release will be straight.

Bend at the knees as you release the ball to avoid dropping the ball on the lane. The ball should contact the lane like a plane coming in for a landing.

When getting ready to throw the ball, stand with your knees slightly bent and your feet 8"-12" apart so you will have a stable and well-balanced stance.

When throwing the ball, reach for the pin you wish to hit as though you want to shake hands. This will help you to avoid throwing the ball across your body.

Always end with the foot opposite your throwing side forward. You should slide to a stop on that foot instead of planting your leg and lurching to a stop.

Always try to start in the same spot for your strike ball until you have your throwing technique down. After that, you can move left or right to accommodate your ball travel.

Always try to throw over the same arrow on the lane for your strike ball so you can track your need to adjust your shot.

Always make adjustments by moving your body to the left or right, not by changing the direction of your arm. Your arm should act like a pendulum - straight back, then straight forward.
